If you’ve ever spilt red wine on a rug or carpet, then you will know the importance of how quickly you need to act before the tannin in the wine starts to re dye the fibre. If you don’t have access to a carpet extractor then the best option is always to blot up the stain with a white towel by dabbing to remove the excess liquid.
The next step is to mix a 500ml spray bottle with 5 drops of dishwashing liquid and fill the rest with water. The dishwashing liquid will break the surface tension of the water and allow the liquid to penetrate the fibres and enable you to blot up more of the red wine. This process may only take 20min but can take an hour or so.
The main thing is to remember is to not saturate the fibre without blotting up the liquid. You should stop when you cannot see any more colour transferring into the cloth and the item looks visually clean.
Drying the area is also very important. I like to use a hair dryer no closer than 30cm from the carpet, rug or upholstery because this process can burn the fibres, and all we are trying to do is speed up the evaporation process.
